What to Wear for a Photoshoot
Creating Stories (and Maybe a Little Drama) With Your Wardrobe
I’ve been lucky to work with some of the most talented editorial stylists all over the world. Watching them transform simple fabrics into breathtaking looks has been a constant source of inspiration. They taught me something invaluable: clothes aren’t just clothes—they’re storytellers. And when it comes to photography, every story becomes richer with a little contrast, a little tension.
The secret to a great visual story? A touch of the unexpected. It’s about blending opposites—the softness of lace paired with the structure of wool, bold stripes mingling with delicate florals, or sequins with a casual knit. These surprising combinations give an image its heartbeat, a spark of life that makes it unforgettable.
One of my most memorable fashion shoots was in Paris, where outfit and location worked together in perfect harmony. While scouting, I stumbled upon a vintage fencing studio hidden behind an ivy-covered arch. To get there, you walked through a small, enchanting garden, with overgrown roses brushing against your shoulders, and at the end of the path stood an old, weathered door. It creaked open to reveal a world straight out of a dream—French windows letting in soft, glowing light, fencing gear scattered with charming indifference, and the quiet energy of a space steeped in history.
For the shoot, our stylist chose an all-white palette and played with textures that balanced structure and delicacy—airy lace alongside textured, tailored jackets with just the right amount of edge. The romantic elegance of the outfits against the rugged, lived-in beauty of the studio created a story I’ll never forget. It was proof of how powerfully location and styling can work together to tell a narrative.
When planning your shoot, think not just about your outfit but the setting you want to inhabit. Perhaps a soft knit sweater against the jagged lines of an urban skyline, or a bold leather jacket in a sunny, flower-strewn meadow. Sometimes, the magic happens when outfit and location seem at odds—those sparks of contradiction can elevate a photo into something unforgettable.
Accessories, too, can bring their own quiet drama. A wide-brimmed hat casting an air of mystery, a scarf catching the breeze, or a pair of well-loved boots grounding your look in something honest. Even a pair of earrings can make a statement—those small, gleaming details can change the entire feel of an image.
But the heart of every image is you. These photos aren’t about trends or fleeting fashions; they’re about capturing your presence, your character, and your essence at this moment in time.
If you’re unsure where to begin, don’t worry—that’s where the fun starts. Together, we can dive into your wardrobe, imagine dream locations, and create the perfect balance of simplicity, contrast, and unexpected beauty.
Because when your outfit, the setting, and your spirit align, it’s no longer just a photograph. It becomes art, alive with your story.
