Photographing AlphaMinds Academy

At AlphaMinds Academy in Jersey City, there’s a familiar energy in the air as parents and children gather before the concert. Twice a year, I step into this vibrant world to photograph the students, teachers, and families. Each time, I’m reminded of what draws me to photographing local events: the unspoken stories waiting to be captured.

Before the concert begins, the classrooms are filled with focused students. It’s in these quiet, fleeting moments—a child’s intense gaze, a teacher’s gentle encouragement—that the heart of the day comes alive. One of my favorite scenes is the chess class. The students, deeply absorbed in their games, create a calm yet compelling atmosphere. There’s no dramatic action, just a stillness that feels meaningful—like they’re part of something greater than the pieces on the board.

Then there’s the math class, which caught me by surprise. I’ve always preferred art over math—it felt freer, more expressive. But the math teacher at AlphaMinds changed my perspective. With her vibrant red hair and calm, creative presence, she transforms numbers into something engaging and unexpected. Watching her work feels less like solving equations and more like exploring possibilities.

What truly makes this work special, though, are the people. The families I photograph at these events throughout Jersey City and Hoboken have become part of my community. At every gathering, I see familiar faces, and these connections add a deeper meaning to the moments I capture. Whether it’s a parent adjusting a child’s collar or sharing a laugh before the concert, these small interactions make each photograph feel like part of a larger story.

As an immigrant, building a sense of belonging takes time. But photographing these local events, seeing the same faces year after year, and capturing the growth of students and families has made this community feel like home.

The trust these families place in me is something I treasure. I often hear the same words: “I’ve never looked so good in a photo.” It’s a simple compliment, but one that brings me immense joy—reminding me why I do what I do.

Photographing events like these—whether at schools, community gatherings, or local celebrations—allows me to create connections and celebrate the vibrant spirit of Jersey City and Hoboken. It’s a privilege to tell these stories, one frame at a time.
