Behind the Scenes with Kavkaz Dance Studio
May and June swept by in a blur of back-to-back photoshoots and late-night editing sessions, but when Kavkaz Dance Studio (KDS) invited me to document their behind-the-scenes preparations and concert at the YMCA in Wayne, NJ, I felt a special excitement. This wasn’t just another event—it was a celebration of culture, community, and identity, and I couldn’t wait to capture it.
KDS isn’t your typical dance studio. It’s a place where the dances of the Caucasus, representing all its diverse nationalities, are embraced and taught. It’s a beautiful concept—creating a space where everyone is welcome, and where traditions are passed down through movement and art. Watching the dancers practice, I felt like each step told a story, woven from centuries of cultural memory.
What took my breath away were the costumes. They weren’t just representations—they were the real deal. Each piece was custom-made, ordered from Kabardino-Balkaria (the former Circassia). Every dancer had a costume tailored to them, ensuring that each was as personal as the dance itself. The authenticity and craftsmanship of the costumes infused the entire performance with a richness that went beyond aesthetics—it was a tribute to heritage.
The concert, choreographed and directed by Zalina Habj-Bik, was nothing short of extraordinary. I had the privilege of witnessing the creative process—the thoughtful choreography, the timing, and the attention to every detail. The show moved seamlessly, balancing moments of quiet reflection with joyful crescendos and powerful catharsis. The audience laughed, cried, and lived each moment with the dancers. It was as if time stood still, and we were all swept up in the magic of the performance.
Even amid the June chaos, as parents juggled countless responsibilities, their commitment to this concert was undeniable. Moms, dads, and families worked tirelessly behind the scenes, making sure everything was perfect. Their dedication and love shone through in every performance, every smile, and every step. It was an honor to be there, camera in hand, capturing not just the dance but the spirit of the community behind it all.
